For more information about Monticello, be sure to visit the Monticello Business and Professional Association's website! If you're planning a trip to South-Central Wisconsin, be sure to check out some of our favorite area attractions listed below! Retreats The area surrounding our shop offers multiple options for retreats catering to the creative types. Whether you quilt, write, scrapbook, sew, knit, craft, or do any combination of these or other creative hobbies, these retreat centers have been designed to suit your specific needs.
Two Chatelaines’ Farm and Fern Hill are both located just outside of New Glarus, which is about 5 miles north of Monticello. While the two retreats are not related in any way, they do share some similarities. Each home sleeps up to eight individuals and caters specifically to crafters, including specially designed workrooms!
Mt. Horeb, which is about 30 minutes north of Monticello, boasts a larger retreat center for creative people called Magnolia Ridge Hideaway. The house sleeps up to 24 individuals and like Two Chatelaines’ Farm and Fern Hill, it has a large workspace specially designed for creative hobbies. Recreation There are so many recreational activities in Green County that it’s hard to keep track. Are you a bicyclist? Well, have we got trails for you! The Badger State Trail features the 1200-foot long Stewart Tunnel, just north of where our shop is located in Monticello. The Badger State Trail starts in Madison with a connection to the Capital City Trail and continues to the Illinois border where it connects with the Jane Addams trail and continues to Freeport, Illinois.
The Sugar River State Recreational Trail runs 23 miles through Broadhead, Albany, Monticello and New Glarus. It was one of the first rails-to- trails conversions in Wisconsin.
Dining If you’re looking for traditional Swiss cuisine, head 5 miles up Hwy 69 to New Glarus, also known as “America’s Little Switzerland”! Get just a taste of what New Glarus has to offer at one of these restaurants:
Glarner Stube New Glarus Hotel Restaurant New Glarus Bakery
If you want to dine somewhere closer to our shop, there are numerous options in Monticello. For a fine dining experience head two doors down to The Dining Room at 209 Main. Not only do Chef Wave and his staff treat you to some of the best food around (4 stars from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel!), Jane will help you choose the perfect wine to go with your meal. Make sure to check out their textile display, as it changes throughout the year. For their current menu, check out their website. If you’re in town for breakfast or lunch, stop at the M&M Café just a block South of Quilter’s Compass. They offer traditional diner food, but our favorite treat is their homemade pie. Breweries & Wineries Are you a beer or wine lover? Perhaps you’re both! If you describe yourself as a lover of one-of-a-kind beers and wines, you’ll be visiting the right area! Green County, Wisconsin boasts two breweries, which both offer tours and beer tastings. New Glarus is also home to Primrose Winery which offers free wine tastings and has unique wines with fun stories to back them up – ask about their rhubarb wine when you visit!
